Luxury Resorts in Tuscany

Best Luxury Resorts in Tuscany (+ Castles & Villas)

A handpicked comprehensive selection of the best luxury resorts in Tuscany. From hotels and resorts, to castles and villas with private pool. (+ find out the most popular and my favourite hotels in the area)

Tuscany is located in central Italy and is one of the most beautiful regions in the country. It’s known for its stunning countryside, centuries-old cities, tasty food and its world-renowned wine. In Tuscany you can find everything from rolling hills and vineyards, to charming medieval towns, cities rich in art and culture and delicious food. Let’s also not forget about the gorgeous beaches along the Tuscan coast on the Mediterranean Sea. That’s why it’s one of my favorite places in the world for a holiday.

The most famous cities in Tuscany like Florence, Pisa or Siena are definitely worth a visit, but the real beauty of the region lies in its countryside. The endless hills covered in vineyards and olive trees, the small charming medieval towns and the castles are simply breathtaking.

I can’t write about Italy without mentioning the food and wine. Italian cuisine is famous for its simplicity and quality ingredients. Tuscany is no exception and dishes like Pappardelle al cinghiale and Bistecca alla Fiorentina are not to be missed. If you’re a cheese lover like me, you have to try the pecorino cheese. It’s made from sheep milk that gives it an earthy, slightly tangy flavor. Of course, I can’t talk about Tuscany without mentioning its wine. Probably the most famous wine from the region is Chianti, but there are many other high-quality wines to try. Some of them are Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG.

The Tuscan countryside is also home to some of the most luxurious resorts in the world. This means that you have to book your accommodation well in advance, because the demand is high and it’s close to impossible to find a luxurious resort at the last minute. So find out which are the best luxury resorts in Tuscany, including hand-picked hotels and valuable tips.

Where I stayed in Tuscany

Tuscany is very beautiful and there are many great luxury hotels in it, so choosing among the luxury resorts in Tuscany to stay can be difficult. For my trips I usually prefer staying at luxury hotels in Tuscan countryside that are in (or close to) historic towns. In this way I get to stay in centuries-old buildings and enjoy breathtaking views. At the same time you are away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities like Florence. At the same time I’m near many small local restaurants and bakeries that serve authentic Tuscan cuisine. You also have the chance to explore the charming cobblestone streets and immerse yourself in the past without all the crowds of tourists.

One of my favorite small Tuscan towns with a luxury hotel in it is Cortona. It’s a charming hilltop town with picturesque narrow streets, medieval city center and stunning views. If you are looking for a medieval atmosphere and vibe, Cortona is one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany for that.

Another great thing about Cortona is that it’s right in the heart of Tuscany. You’re less than an hour drive from Perugia (going past the beautiful Lago Trasimeno lake), Arezzo and Montepulciano. The last is famous for its vino nobile di Montepulciano wine. And Siena is just a stone throw further, exactly 1 hour away by car. If you fancy a visit to Florence, it’s about 1h 30min away – perfect for a day trip or next stop in your itinerary.

My favorite luxury resort in Tuscany: Monastero Di Cortona Hotel & Spa
Why: Housed in a beautifully restored 11th-century monastery, has spa, outdoor pool and indoor pool set in an ancient Roman cistern
What I liked: The stunning sunset views, the central location with lots of great restaurants nearby, the stunning restored frescoes

If you choose a hotel in Tuscany countryside, I would advise you to rent a car. This will give you the best flexibility and you’ll be able to explore the area on your own. If you don’t want to rent a car, another option is to rely on your hotel. Most luxury hotels offer pickup services and are able to organize guided tours or transportation to a place of interest. If you want to feel more like a local, using public transport is also an option. There are many buses and trains connecting the villages. Some downsides to this is that you can’t always reach your destination by public transport or even if you do – it’ll take a lot of time.
