Overwater bungalow in Moorea with lagoon and mountain in the back

Best Overwater Bungalow in Moorea (& Tahiti + Alternatives)

All you need to know about an overwater bungalow in Moorea and Tahiti. You’ll also get recommendations for beach bungalows & resorts that offer similar experience.

Waking up above crystal clear waters with coral reefs and tropical fish, is a dream for many people. And if you are reading this, you’re going to fulfil yours by staying at a resort with an overwater bungalow in Moorea.

The island is known for its stunning natural beauty, including lush forests, beautiful beaches, and colourful coral reefs. People also come here to see humpback whales between July and October. An experience that alone is worth visiting Moorea for. Not to mention that the island is just 30min away from Tahiti by ferry.

On top of that, the island is compact and easy to navigate. There’s a single, 37 mile (59km) ring road around Moorea. Thus you can rent a bike or a car and easily do sightseeing trips and immerse in the local culture. The island is also a lot cheaper than Bora Bora! There each resort is on its own motus (islet) which makes it hard to experience Tahitian culture.

Little known secret is that some of the best overwater bungalows are actually in Moorea! Snorkelling is also better at Moorea compared to Bora-Bora. The reason is that there are a lot of coral reefs and tropical fish at Moorea. Meanwhile in Bora-Bora there are a lot of shallow lagoons, but not much to see. Let’s see the various overwater bungalows in Moorea and what makes each one unique.

My favorite overwater bungalow in Moorea

There are several resorts offering overwater bungalows, each with its own unique charm. Yet, when it comes to choosing my favorite, there are a few key factors that stand out.

I prefer bungalows that provide privacy and uninterrupted views of the stunning surroundings. Additionally, I value luxury and comfort, opting for a resort that provides top-notch service.

Finally, I appreciate eco-conscious practices and conservation efforts. My favorite overwater bungalow in Moorea is one that combines these elements seamlessly.

My favorite overwater bungalow in Moorea: Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa
Why: great, secluded location with stunning views, overwater restaurant & modern, regularly updated rooms.
What I liked: the awesome views from the private overwater bungalow, the luxurious rooms, the coral-planting experience

Best Luxury overwater bungalow in Moorea

Currently there are 3 resorts offering overwater bungalow in Moorea. The famous InterContinental Resort and Spa Moorea was closed a few years ago. All 3 have stunning overwater bungalows that rival (or are even better) the ones in Bora-Bora.

Regardless of which one you pick, it’ll be an unforgettable experience that you’ll remember. So without wasting more of your time, here are the resorts you must book!

Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa

If you are looking for the best luxury overwater bungalow in Moorea, then Hilton is the place to stay. That’s especially true if you are looking for a romantic getaway or a honeymoon escape. The resort is in the northern part of the island, with clear views of the ocean to the north and the majestic mountains to the south.

The resort has a total of 54 overwater bungalows in Moorea, divided into 3 types:

King Overwater Bungalow
These are the closest ones to the resort’s beach and they have views to the lagoon and the mountains. They are also the least private ones as other visitors of the resort can see you on your private sun-deck. But they are also the cheapest ones with prices ~$1100 – $1200 in the high season.

King Panoramic Overwater Bungalow
These overwater bungalows are farther out on the pontoon and have better views of the ocean. This also makes them more private. If you are looking for the best value for money bungalow in the resort, this is the one to book. Price range is $1200 – $1400.

King Premium Panoramic Overwater Bungalow
If you want the best the resort has to offer, then this overwater bungalow in Moorea is just for you. They are located at the far end of the pontoon and have the best views of the lagoon and the ocean. Prices in the high season are ~$1800 – $2000 per night.

Hilton Moorea resort and overwater bungalow birdseye view
Overwater bungalows in Hilton Moorea Lagoon & Spa

Other than the view, there are no differences between the 3 overwater bungalow types. All of them are 667ft2 (62m2) and have a king size bed, marble bathrooms and relaxation area. But the highlight is the private sun-deck. It has lounge chairs that provides direct access to the ocean water. Another interesting feature is the glass floor-viewing panel in the room. It lets you watch marine life while relaxing on the sofa.

Other than the beautiful, modern rooms, Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa has a lot more to offer. There’s free WiFi throughout the resort, few tennis courts, outdoor pool by the beach, gym and a spa center. If you enjoy the ocean, there’s also free snorkeling equipment and kayaks. You can also book activities like coral planting, jeep tours, boat tours and more. If you are staying during the humpback whale season (July-October), I recommend you to book the experience to swim with these magnificent creatures!

The resort excels in their food offering, too! In my opinion Hilton Moorea has the best food among the overwater bungalow resorts in Moorea. You can choose between 4 restaurants. And one of them is the only overwater restaurant on the island! It’s so nice watching the marine life swim while having dinner. The room-service menu is also good! Having a private dinner in your bungalow is something I do recommend!

If overwater bungalows are above your budget, check the King bungalow with Lagoon view. It’s the same size as the overwater bungalows and has the same amenities. The difference is that this type of bungalow is right on the beach, where half of the bungalow is above the water. So you have direct access to the water from your private deck, just the water level is shallow.

SOFITEL Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort

This is the resort with overwater bungalows in Moorea that you must book if you love snorkeling! In my experience, Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort is the best place for snorkeling in the whole of Tahiti. The resort is located at the end of Temae Beach – the only truly protected and the best beach in Moorea. The airport and ferry terminal are also just 1-2 miles (2-3km) away.

Sofitel has a total of 38 overwater bungalows in Moorea, divided into 4 different types:

  • Superior Overwater Bungalow
  • Superior Horizon Overwater Bungalow
  • Luxury Overwater Bungalow
  • Luxury Horizon Overwater Bungalow

The superior ones are 452ft2 (42m2). Meanwhile the “Luxury” bungalows are the largest on the island at 893ft2 (83m2). And if it has “horizon” in its name, then the bungalow is at the end of the deck and has clear views of the horizon. The sea depth varies between 3 and 10 feet (1-3m) depending on how far from the shore your bungalow is.

Other than that, all overwater bungalows have everything that you can expect from a 5-star resort. Things like free WiFi, air conditioning, minibar, safe, iron & ironing board, coffee & tea making facilities are all there. What’s more interesting is the private deck. It has sunbeds and direct access to the protected lagoon (motorboats are not allowed). There’s also a small glass panel on the floor. It let’s you observe the marine life while relaxing in your overwater bungalow in Moorea.

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea overwater bungalows resort overview
Sofitel Kia Ora overwater bungalows in Moorea

When it comes to activities and things to fill your day, there’s a lot to choose from. Be it a session in the gym or the spa or hang by the beach pool. You can also hire a kayak or paddle board to explore the lagoon or book an excursion. Food options include 2 bars and 2 restaurants, though I think the food is not on a 5-star hotel level.

In my opinion, the resort is not as private as Hilton due to the proximity to the public beach, but it’s also cheaper. It’s also a bit far from other restaurants and cafes, so have this in mind. I think that Sofitel Kia ora has some of the best overwater bungalows in Moorea and is definitely worth it.

If the overwater bungalows are too expensive, there are a few other types of bungalows. The ones that are worth it are their Superior Ocean View and the Luxury Beachfront bungalows.

The ocean view bungalows are facing the lagoon and the overwater bungalows. They have plenty of room and you are just a few steps away from the ocean. The rates per night are in the range of $800 – $900 per night in the high season.

The beachfront bungalow is very spacious and has gorgeous views of Tahiti and the ocean. It’s also located right on the white-sand beach. You’re just a few steps away from the feeling of soft sand between your toes. The prices are usually $1000 – $1100 in the high season.

Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea

Manava Beach Resort is located in the northern part of Moorea, not far from the airport. Another great thing about the location is that it’s very close to a lot of restaurants, cafes & supermarkets (if you need it). This is quite a plus, as the resort has only 2 restaurants and 1 bar. I love exploring the authentic local cuisine whenever I travel, so that’s nice.

The resort offers different kinds of rooms and bungalows. But the star are the 28 overwater bungalows that come in 2 versions:

Overwater Bungalow
It’s 517 sq.ft. (48m2) in size and is situated closer to the resort’s beach. Usually you’ll have a view to the beach and the island or the walkway to the rest of the bungalows. Prices are usually $1000 – $1200 in the high season (including all taxes & breakfast)

Premium Overwater Bungalow
This type of overwater bungalow in Moorea has the same size of 517 sq.ft. (48m2). The difference with the non-premium ones is that these have clear views of the ocean and the horizon. So if you want complete privacy and gorgeous views, my advice is to book this type of bungalow. Prices in the range 1200-1400$ per night in the high season (including all taxes & breakfast).

All rooms at Manava have Polynesian-inspired decor. The rooms feature all modern amenities you would expect from a 4-star resort. Be it free WiFi, air conditioning, minibar and coffee/tea making facilities and more. The overwater bungalows are equipped with a glass panel on the floor for observing the sea life. And if you like the sun, you’d enjoy the private deck with sun beds and direct access to the lagoon.

Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea resort overview and overwater bungalows

Outside the bungalows, Manava Beach Resort has a lot to offer. There’s a big infinity pool by the beach and a spa offering all kinds of procedures. You can also use free snorkeling gear, kayaks, paddle boards and more.

What the resort is famous for is its Blue Diving center. They can organize diving tours or help you with anything related to diving. For me, the most interesting was the coral grafting experience. There you help in the creation & preservation of coral reefs and it’s also fun! I was also surprised that below the overwater bungalows there’s a coral nursery.

If you are looking for the cheapest overwater bungalows in Moorea, then this is the place to book! Yet, if the overwater bungalows are still outside your budget or sold out, fear not. Just make sure to check the Beach or Garden Pool Bungalows. They are either right on the sandy beach or 100-300ft (30-90m) away from it. The bungalows have the same amenities and comfort as the overwater ones at a lot lower price ($600 – $800)!

Tip: If you are traveling to Moorea from Tahiti by ferry, make sure to check the schedule before booking! The last ferry usually departs Tahiti between 5PM – 6:30PM, depending on the day. If your flight lands late, you may not be able to reach Moorea and will have to stay a night at Tahiti. Check the schedules of the 2 main ferry companies – Aremiti and Teravau.

Best Alternative – overwater bungalow in Tahiti

If you want to spend some time on the island of Tahiti, you can stay in an overwater bungalow in Moorea there, too! The island is not very famous among tourists. Many people use it as an intermediate stop along their way to Moorea or Bora-Bora.

But Tahiti is a beautiful island. It’s nature spans from mountain trails and waterfalls to beaches and coral reefs. It’s also the best place to immerse yourself into the Polynesian culture.

InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa

If you want to stay at an overwater bungalow in Tahiti, this is your only option. But don’t be fooled, it can rival the overwater bungalow resorts in Moorea! The location couldn’t be better, too! It’s in the north-west part of Tahiti, with views to Moorea island. You can reach the airport in 7min and the harbor is only 10min away by car. There are no other hotels or buildings nearby, making it the perfect private getaway.

InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa has many different rooms to choose from, some offering fantastic views of Moorea. And then there are the overwater bungalows in Tahiti that we are more interested in. There are 4 types of them:

Overwater Bungalow Ocean View
There are 13 bungalows of this type and they have been recently renovated. They are located close to the Lotus infinity pool and have 398 sq.ft. (37m2) indoor space and a small deck. They can accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 children (sleeping on the sofa bed). The rooms also have separate lounge and sleeping areas.

Overwater Bungalow Moorea View
These bungalows are very similar to the Ocean View ones, having the same room size. The difference is that there are only 2 of the Moorea Views overwater bungalows. They are located at the end of the pontoon, offering clear views of Moorea. They also have slightly larger decks. Up to 2 adults and 1 child (on the sofa bed) can sleep in there.

Motu Suite Overwater Bungalow
The 8 suite bungalows are located around the resort’s private motu (islet) and offer fantastic views of Moorea. The indoor space is still 398 sq.ft. (37m2), but the deck is a lot larger than the other bungalows at 344 sq.ft. (32m2). On the deck you can find 2 sun beds, lounge area as well as a dining table where you can have your breakfast. What I love about this room is that you have stunning views of Moorea even from your bed! It sleeps 2 adults and 1 child on the sofa bed.

Overwater Villa Moorea View
This is the most exclusive overwater bungalow in Tahiti! It has a central location on the resort’s private motu with stunning views of Moorea. The bungalow is 1023 sq.ft. (95m2) with separate sleeping and lounge areas. The bungalow has one king-size bed and one double sofa bed. So it can accommodate up to 4 adults or 2 adults and 2 children. There’s also a walk-in closet and a large bathroom with separate shower and bathtub.

InterContinental Tahiti Resort overview
InterContinental Tahiti overwater bungalows on the right and Mote Suites near the Lagoonarium

All of the overwater bungalows in Tahiti have king size beds, a private deck with direct access to the lagoon and bathroom with shower or bathtub or both. As you might expect, things like free WiFi, coffee & tea making facilities, minibar and air conditioning.

Outside the bungalow, you can enjoy the 2 pools, a variety of water sports, tennis, organized tours and diving lessons or relax in the spa. My personal favourite is the Lagoonarium. It’s a natural pool behind the bungalows with a carefully controlled environment. There more than 200 aquatic species live and prosper – corals, tropical fish and others.

Every week there are different cultural demonstrations of traditional Tahitian crafts & skills. Be it weaving a basket, learning how to open a coconut and more. At the resort you can find 2 restaurants and 2 bars with thematic nights and sows. InterContinental is a great resort offering overwater bungalows in Tahiti. Staying there is definitely worth it.

Cheaper alternatives to overwater bungalow in Moorea

If you’re looking for a more affordable option to an overwater bungalow in Moorea, there are plenty available. You can book beachside or garden bungalow. They offer a similar tropical experience but at a lower cost. Or opt-in to stay at a modern hotel located right on a beach. Plus, you get even better views if your room is on an upper floor!

There are a lot of small hotels and villas in Moorea, thus selecting the best one is not easy. To help you choose, I did extensive research and picked the ones that are worth it and offer all the modern amenities you may need. So, you can still enjoy the beauty of the island without staying at an overwater bungalow in Moorea.

Cook’s Bay Hotel and Suites

As the name suggests, the hotel is located in Cook’s Bay. There are 38 rooms and suites, all facing the sea and offering panoramic views of the bay and Mount Rotui. I would say that the resort has one of the best and most majestic views on the island! Another great plus for the location is that the hotel is right on the shore with a small private beach.

All rooms and suites are modern and have separate bedroom and living areas. There’s also a small kitchenette and a large terrace (or patio for the ground floor rooms) that open up to gorgeous views of the ocean and the mountain. The hotel also has a restaurant and bar, both located on a small islet connected with a bridge to the land. They offer 180-degree view of the bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Among the amenities you can enjoy are a small gym, game room, pool and kayaks on the beach. There’s also on-site concierge to help you with bookings & transfers or offer advice. Within walking distance there are shops, restaurants and different activity providers. In my opinion, Cook’s Bay Hotel and Suites is a great alternative to an overwater bungalow in Moorea at a fraction of the price!

Moorea Island Beach Hotel

Moorea Island Beach Hotel is located in Haapiti on Moorea’s northwest coast. The hotel has 12 modern bungalows – having sea or garden views. All of them have a double bed, bathroom, WiFi, air conditioning, patio with lounge chairs. Basically everything you might expect in a modern hotel.

The hotel doesn’t have any restaurants or bars, but there are plenty of restaurants, shops and grocery stores nearby. At your disposal is the hotel’s professional kitchen & BBQ in the open main salon. There guests can use the fully equipped commercial kitchen and have a private fridge. The area has dining tables, lounge chairs and places to socialize.

During the day you can relax by the lagoon on the private beach and the sunbed. You can also use kayaks and bicycles for free! And if you need to rent a car or scooter, or book an excursion, the staff can assist you. It may not be an overwater bungalow in Moorea, but in my opinion this is a great option for those seeking freedom and relaxation.

Tips on choosing overwater bungalow in Moorea

The excitement of staying in an overwater bungalow in Moorea can be exhilarating. But to get the most out of this experience, here are a few tips and things to have in mind when selecting your bungalow.

First – the location of the resort and the bungalow itself. My suggestion is to stay on the northern side of the island. The weather and the waters there are calmer, making it ideal for water sports. The views are also better with the majestic Mont Rotui as a backdrop. There are also more restaurants & shops in the area.

When it comes to the overwater bungalow’s location, in my experience it’s a lot better to book one with unobstructed views. They do come at a higher price, but you have better privacy and the views are well worth it. Not to mention how romantic it is to stay on your bungalow’s deck and watch the orange sky during sunset with no one else in sight.

Sofitel Kia Ora overwater bungalows, beach and pool areas
Sofitel Kia Ora has spacious overwater bungalows and is one of the best resorts for snorkeling.

If you’re planning to visit several islands on your holiday in French Polynesia, consider purchasing an Air Tahiti Multi-islands Pass. It can be a lot cheaper than buying individual tickets. Furthermore, I’d suggest booking a resort which is closer to the airport. The last thing you’d want after 2 flights and a day full of walking is to spend another 30min. or so traveling back to your hotel.

The next thing to have in mind when choosing an overwater bungalow in Moorea is the dining options. Do check what restaurants are available at the resort and within a walking distance. I’ve been to spectacular resorts, but when you have lunch and dinner at the same 1 or 2 restaurants every day, you’ll get bored after a few days. Therefore, having more options is always nice.

Benefits of staying at an overwater bungalow in Moorea

Staying at an overwater bungalow in Moorea has many advantages compared to Bora Bora and neighboring islands. Firstly, Moorea is more relaxed and calm and less touristy. There are also more food options, because you can visit some of the local restaurants and cafes.

While on Bora-Bora, most overwater bungalow resorts are on a private motus and your only option is what the resort has to offer. With each resort being on its own motus, this makes it more difficult to explore the local culture. You’d have to take a boat to the main island or to Moorea / Tahiti. On the other hand, you can also stay at an overwater bungalow in Tahiti and get the best of both worlds.

Secondly, Moorea has beautiful nature. This includes lush mountains, beaches, and some of the best coral reefs. So there are lots of things to do both in the water and on land (especially if you like hiking). Also, staying in an overwater bungalow in Moorea is usually cheaper than in Bora Bora, so it’s better if you’re on a budget.

Overall, staying in an overwater bungalow in Moorea gives you a mix of luxury, affordability, and natural beauty, making it a great choice for a memorable island vacation.
